Frosts

We have had 3 freezing nights in the past week.  Needless to say we have spent a lot of time trying to cover and save all the little plants.  The first frost caught us by surprise.  There weren’t any warnings or advisories out that night.  We had a planned loss of power overnight and Josh was checking on the chicks every few hours throughout the night when he woke me up at to help him cover seedlings because it was already 35 degrees and dropping.

We replanted the green beans, sweet corn, and popcorn last night.  The peas and potatoes were damaged, but are already sprouting back out.  Many of the peppers were damaged, but hopefully some of them will make it.  Most of the strawberries were budding and blooming and the flowers have now turned black.  I think we won’t get many berries this year.  It’s been kind of a rough week, but Josh had encouraging words last night… “Unless something tragic happens, this is the worse the gardens will look all year.”  That made me feel better, because he is right.

Thankfully, we hadn’t planted the tomatoes or cucumber transplants yet.  We just planted the tomatoes today, and they look great.  We plan to plant the cucumbers this evening.

Everything that was planted under the row covers was left untouched by the frost and is growing great!  We plan to plant a lot more under row covers next year.

We are looking forward to the first CSA drop off.  We have been eating lettuce and radishes for the last week and they taste amazing…Something for you to look forward to next week!
